Overview

Bone marrow is a spongy tissue found inside some bones in the body. The bone marrow is the production center of the blood cells (white, red, and platelets). A biopsy of this tissue is used to diagnose or stage certain types of blood cancers or diseases.

Biopsies are done in our office by one of our providers from the pelvic bone. The procedure takes less than 15 minutes to complete and is nearly painless with our technique.

The Procedure

Bone marrow is removed in the following steps:

• If needed, you are given medicine to help you relax.
• The provider cleans the skin and injects numbing medication into the surrounding skin and bone surface.
• Once fully numbed, the biopsy tool is inserted into the predetermined area of the bone. The tool used has a hollow center that collects the marrow in a core that is sent for pathology.
• Once the sample is collected, the tool is removed. Pressure is then applied to the area with a small bandage. Pain medication is provided if needed and you will return in approximately 10 days to review the results.
